Getting Free e-books on the Kindle

I have long had to do complicated things to find free e-books on the Kindle. Imagine my surprise when I found I can do it without using the browser at all! Here is what you do.

Click 'Home', then 'Menu', then 'Shop in Kindle store', then click 'Kindle Bestsellers', and in the top right hand corner, in the smallest writing they can, they have written 'Kindle Top 100 Free'....

This gives you the top current 100 free books you can download. It was so simple and yet, took me months and a few lucky mistakes to find it!

My Book on Kindles

UK kindle popular classics and US kindle popular classics were one of the first places I visited when I got a Kindle and loaded it up with all the books I know I should have read, and never have.

http://inkmesh.com/free-ebooks is an ebook search engine that makes it easier to find free ebooks and compare ebook prices for the Kindle

http://www.retroread.com is a FREE publishing service that allows you to automatically convert any of the hundreds of thousands of free public domain books available in epub format at books.google.com to the Kindle-compatible mobi file format. RetroRead is also a community-created library of all of the books others have converted, and which you can download for free.

http://i.classicreader.com Search the Free Books. Search our online library of thousands of free books by authors such as Dickens, Austen, Shakespeare and many others. I loved it as you can read online, without needing to download the story.

Amazon.com Kindle Freebies is a great way to see what Amazon is offering today for free!

Amazon.co.uk Kindle Freebies is a great way to see what the British Amazon is offering today for free!

Magic Catalogue of Free books for the Kindle lets you download all 33,000 thousand Kindle ready book titles to be downloaded on your Kindle. I looked at it, and if you are going to download it do it via WiFi or cable. I quickly deleted as looking through all those books was a bit too much for me, but it does automatically download the books to your Kindle so for some, this may be a great way. What do you think? I would love to know as a reader recommended it.

http://free-ebook-downloads.net is the biggest community for downloading Free Ebooks, PDF, Words Documents, Magazines, Audio Books, Free Tutorials and much much more! You can read this site as soon as the Kindle auto zoom kicks into play. It was one I had never heard of before, but it does look good.

http://www.ereaderiq.com is a real find. The site tells you which books Amazon are currently offering for free. There are a few problems with the site, which you need to overcome. The first is you really need to see it on a desktop. This is such a cool site, however that I needed to show to to you. The second problem is that while it will tell you what books are free in the UK, it won't take you there. You need to open another window, using the right Amazon for you, such as .com, .co.uk, .de etc, and then you search, cut and paste the titles into the new window and it will send it straight to your computer. This site will give you both the modern titles, which often appear in the top 100, and the 15,000 public domain titles as well.

http://m.ereaderiq.com is the mobile version of http://www.ereaderiq.com. You can now look at the books and if you are in the US, download onto the Kindle. If you are in the UK, you can now have the http://www.amazon.co.uk open on your desktop and copy in the free books into the search box and order them that way. Certainly one worth bookmarking if you want the most up to date offerings of free Kindle books.

http://m.feedbooks.com/ is the mobile version ofhttp://www.feedbooks.com which needs to be viewed on a desktop and downloaded there and transported over using a USB cable or WiFi or Amazon will charge you. Discover thousands of eBooks, including new releases and the best collection of free public domain and original books, that you can read on any mobile device.

http://mnybks.net is the mobile version of the great desktop site http://www.manybooks.net. I use them an awful lot. I download the books to my computer and then upload them to the Kindle. I love the layout of this site.

http://www.gutenberg.org has a mobile version called http://m.gutenberg.org/ which works very well on the Kindle. Again I tend to download all I need to my computer and transfer it to the Kindle, to avoid delivery charges. Apparently if you use the WiFi option, it is not a problem. You can also read a book online on your Kindle. They have so many books, in so many catergories, that you will certainly find a great read, or audio book here!

300+ Places for Free Books Online is a fabulous list of places to find free books. I looked through them, and thought, what the heck! So I gave you the link for you to check them all out for yourself!

http://www.bookyards.com is another great e-book library. It needs to be seen on a desktop computer to fully appreciate it. It is well laid out and does have all you need.

Finding Free E-Books for the Kindle

When you first look, and search on Google, you will find endless sites offering free Kindle books. However, when you look at the books on offer, most are taken directly from http://www.gutenberg.org but only offer a small fraction of what the original site offers. Even worse, they have removed the huge number of formats you can see them at the Gutenburg site.

Why don't I first go to the Gutenburg site every time, if it is so good?

Amazon is always my first port of call, as I love a few of their different features. I love being able to rate and share the books I read as soon as I read it. Also I like the fact that at the end of a book, they offer me about three or four other books I might also like.

The final, and probably the most important reason is that if anything happens to my Kindle, then Amazon will be able to restore all the books I have bought from them onto it. Any other sites with free downloads, unless you keep a copy on your desktop, need to be reuploaded.

There are so many great free books out there - you will be spoilt for choice. The only problem with free books is I don't seem to be able to find many in any other languages than English. I am particularly keen to track down Romanian free books in a Kindle format, which is not .pdf.
